John Chapter 6 Translation and Commentary - Vintage

10/31/2012 - James White

In our constant attempt to meet the needs of the Christian community for sound theological material, we are making available this translation and commentary on the sixth chapter of John. Our reasons for doing so are to bring the powerful light of Scripture to bear upon two rather distinct issues. First, Jesus’ words in John 6 are vital for our understanding of the doctrine of God’s election of the saints. John 6:38ff is one of the clearest expositions of the Lord’s doctrine of salvation that we have. Hence, the proclamation of the truth will go far to correct the many errors, both within as well as outside of, the Christian community. Secondly,. John 6:48ff is an important passage in dealing with sacramental theology, specifically the teachings of the Roman Catholic Church in regards to transubstantiation and their entire doctrine of salvation. It is hoped that this literal translation (done by Ministry Director James White) and commentary will be helpful in the ministry of the saints.

The sixth chapter of the Gospel of John it a fascinating piece of literature - seemingly woven together with great purpose. It is twice the length of the average Johannine chapter. It narrates two great miracles (the feeding of the 5,000 and Jesus’ walking on the water) and ties these together to form the introduction to a very important Christological dialogue. This dialogue then ends in the confession of faith of the true disciples of Jesus.

1. After these things Jesus went across the Sea of Galilee (or Tiberius). 2. And a great crowd was following Him, because they saw the signs which He was doing concerning the sick ones.

Commentary: Much of Jesus’ ministry is connected intimately with the Sea of Galilee. John gives what it probably the official "Roman” name for the body of water, though this name appears infrequently. The town of Tiberius (named for the Emperor) had born that name for only a few years at the time of Jesus’ ministry, hence the secondary mention of the name by John. John tells of a large crowd that follows Jesus, presumably by land rather than by sea, because of Jesus’ healing abilities. No mention is made of their being sick amongst this crowd; they seem more attracted by the possibility of a miracle than by anything else.

3. And Jesus went up into the mountain, and there He was sitting with His disciples. 4. Now the Passover was near - the Feast of the Jews.

Commentary: There it possibly some imagery in verse 3 that is reminiscent of the Sermon on the Mount in Matthew (5:1). Seemingly the Lord and His disciples have arrived by themselves, and have gone up into “the” mountain alone. If Jesus was wishing to privately speak to the disciples John does not mention it. What he does mention, however, is the fact that the Passover was near. Bearing in mind the non-Jewish character of his audience, John mentions that the Passover is the feast of the Jews - an item that would be surely unnecessary were his audience primarily Jewish. John may just be placing the events in their historical setting. Or, he may be attaching importance to Jesus’ actions in what is going to follow. Is Jesus setting Himself up as the bringer of the true Passover? If the Passover was near, why were these people not going up to Jerusalem? Was Jesus pointing to Himself as the fulfillment of the Passover? The next chapter begins with the Feast of Tabernacles - which would be nearly six months after the Passover itself. Hence, there seems to be a time gap between the two chapters, and a real purpose behind John’s mentioning of the Passover Feast.

5. Then when Jesus raised up His eyes and beheld that a great crowd was coming to Him, he said to Philip, “Where will we buy bread in order that these may eat?” 6. But this he said testing Him, for He Himself knew what He was about to do.

Commentary: John pictures Jesus seeing the multitude coming to Him from a distance. It would seem that He realizes that they will be hungry, for they would have traveled a long distance. The synoptics, however, indicate that a period of teaching intervened, and by the time the teaching was over, it was too late for them to return to their homes - hence the need for food.

Philip seems the best choice for the Lord’s question, as Philip was from Bethsaida, and if this took place “across the sea” from Capernaum, Bethsaida would be somewhat close by. Hence, turning to the local boy, Jesus asks about sources of food in the neighborhood. But John is quick to point out that Jesus knew all along what He was going to do - the question was to test Philip’s understanding of His own person and His power.

7. Philip answered and said to Him, ‘Two hundred danarii would not be sufficient to buy bread in order that each might receive a little portion.” 8. One of his disciples, Andrew, brother of Simon Peter, said to Him, 9. “There is here a little boy who has five barley loaves and two fishes; but what is that amongst so many?”

Commentary: Philip’s response is one of surprise - the entire apostle band’s treasury probably did not contain enough money to purchase such a vast amount of food, even had such supplies been available. Not catching onto the Lord’s purpose as yet, Andrew (who seems to have been one observant person, always bringing people to Jesus) brings to the Lord’s attention the seeming only source of sustenance - a young boy who had five barley loaves (poor man’s food) and two little fishes. But even Andrew has to add, “but what is that amongst so many?” He does not yet know the sufficiency of the little in the hands of Jesus.

10. Jesus said, ‘Have the men recline.” Now there was much grass in the place. Therefore the men reclined, their number being about 5,000. 11. Therefore when Jesus received the bread and gave thanks, He gave unto the ones reclining; likewise also from the fish; howsoever much they wished.

Commentary: John roots this, the most popular of Jesus’ miracles (judging by the inclusion of this story in every gospel) firmly in history - Jesus gives mundane commands (Luke the historian notes that they were to be grouped by 50’s) and John remembers visual details - there was much grass in the place. The image is striking - a cool spring day - a large group of men and women - well over 5,000, reclining upon the green grass, the harried disciples wondering what in the world their Lord was going to do now. One can see John’s smile as he writes (or dictates) this part of his book - what a longing he must have had to be there again.

Jesus took the bread, and, as was His custom, He gave thanks for it. Unfortunately the exact wording of this prayer is not given to us - we might wonder just how Jesus gave thanks over those little loaves and dried-up fishes. John attaches importance to this act, for he mentions it again in v. 23.

In typical style, the miracle it narrated without flash and fancy. It is simply stated that the food was distributed to the ones reclining - each one taking his fill. The miracle is implied rather than directly stated, though the fact of the miracle is not left in doubt. ...

A Brief Definition of the Trinity - Vintage

10/31/2012 - James White

I know that one of the most oft-repeated questions I have dealt with is, "How does one explain, or even understand, the doctrine of the Trinity?" Indeed, few topics are made such a football by various groups that, normally, claim to be the "only" real religion, and who prey upon Christians as "convert fodder." Be that as it may, when the Christian is faced with a question regarding the Trinity, how might it best be explained?

For me, I know that simplifying the doctrine to its most basic elements has been very important and very useful. When we reduce the discussion to the three clear Biblical teachings that underlie the Trinity, we can move our discussion from the abstract to the concrete Biblical data, and can help those involved in false religions to recognize which of the Biblical teachings it is denying.

We must first remember that very few have a good idea of what the Trinity is in the first place - hence, accuracy in definition will be very important. The doctrine of the Trinity is simply that there is one eternal being of God - indivisible, infinite. This one being of God is shared by three co-equal, co-eternal persons, the Father, the Son, and the Spirit.

It is necessary here to distinguish between the terms "being" and "person." It would be a contradiction, obviously, to say that there are three beings within one being, or three persons within one person. So what is the difference? We clearly recognize the difference between being and person every day. We recognize what something is, yet we also recognize individuals within a classification. For example, we speak of the "being" of man---human being. A rock has "being"---the being of a rock, as does a cat, a dog, etc. Yet, we also know that there are personal attributes as well. That is, we recognize both "what" and "who" when we talk about a person.

The Bible tells us there are three classifications of personal beings---God, man, and angels. What is personality? The ability to have emotion, will, to express oneself. Rocks cannot speak. Cats cannot think of themselves over against others, and, say, work for the common good of "cat kind." Hence, we are saying that there is one eternal, infinite being of God, shared fully and completely by three persons, Father, Son and Spirit. One what, three who's.

NOTE: We are not saying that the Father is the Son, or the Son the Spirit, or the Spirit the Father. It is very common for people to misunderstand the doctrine as to mean that we are saying Jesus is the Father. The doctrine of the Trinity does not in any way say this!

The three Biblical doctrines that flow directly into the river that is the Trinity are as follows:

1) There is one and only one God, eternal, immutable.

2) There are three eternal Persons described in Scripture - the Father, the Son, and the Spirit. These Persons are never identified with one another - that is, they are carefully differentiated as Persons.

3) The Father, the Son, and the Spirit, are identified as being fully deity---that is, the Bible teaches the Deity of Christ and the Deity of the Holy Spirit.

One could possibly represent this as follows:

The three sides of the triangle represent the three Biblical doctrines, as labeled. When one denies any of these three teachings, the other two sides point to the result. Hence, if one denies that there are Three Persons, one is left with the two sides of Full Equality and One God, resulting in the "Oneness" teaching of the United Pentecostal Church and others. If one denies Fully Equality, one is left with Three Persons and One God, resulting in "subordinationism" as seen in Jehovah's Witnesses, the Way International, etc. (though to be perfectly accurate the Witnesses deny all three of the sides in some way---they deny Full Equality (i.e., Jesus is Michael the Archangel), Three Persons (the Holy Spirit is an impersonal, active "force" like electricity) and One God (they say Jesus is "a god"---a lesser divinity than Yahweh; hence they are in reality not monotheists but henotheists). And, if one denies One God, one is left with polytheism, the belief in many gods, as seen clearly in the Mormon Church, the most polytheistic religion I have encountered.

Hopefully these brief thoughts will be of help to you as you "grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ."

Theological Junkies Rejoice

10/31/2012 - Rich Pierce

We have decided to re-post our 'Apologetics Articles' section from our vintage website into the blog feed making that which was old new again. The vast majority of these documents originated in paper form that we called 'Theological Information Sheets' that spanned various topics such as the Trinity, the Deity of Christ and even a sample page describing how to remove one's name from the rolls of the LDS church. Over the next several weeks we will be gradually re-posting those items here on the blog so keep an eye out for them.

Blessings

Update: We have taken great pains to move these pages over and repost them as accurately as possible. If you find an error on a page or even worse, the author is attributed incorrectly please take a moment and send us a note about it and we will corrected it as soon as we possibly can.

On A Reformation Day Special Jumbo Edition of the Dividing Line

10/30/2012 - James White

Given that tomorrow is Reformation Day, we addressed a truly relevant topic. I was joined by the famous TurretinFan and we discussed the claims of Peter Williams on a recent Unbelievable Radio Broadcast, primarily focusing on his arguments for the Papacy and against sola scriptura. For those with a special interest in those areas, this will be a valuable program. Here's the program.

Two Reformation Sunday Sermons

10/28/2012 - James White

Oh, forgot it was Reformation Sunday? Well, I didn't! In the midst of the craziness, and evil, of our day, it is good to remember that 495 years ago, God brought light to a darkened world. He may well have to do so again in the not too distant future! Here are two sermons from today at PRBC on the two great truths of the Reformation, sola fide and sola scriptura.

A Bible Course for Children (and Adults)

10/27/2012 - Jeff Downs

There are a lot of books and curriculum to help Christian parents with teaching our children the content of Bible and the doctrines found therein. And for quite some time, I've been looking for some resources that meet my expectations. For the most part, I have not been satisfied with what I've seen (perhaps I'm simply not looking in the right places). Some my say, just read the Bible. Well, yes, I agree. But I've looking for ways to help solidify the content of what we are reading. Again, I could do this on my own, and I have, but still, I've been looking for other resources.

Well, I do believe I have found what I've been looking for. Lately I have been using, and I'm very pleased with Claire Larsen's God's Great Covenant. At this point, two volumes on the OT have been published and one volume on the NT (the second is forthcoming).

Here is the publishers description of the series:

Teaching the Bible to young children can be a large task, and is often divided up into many small stories. However, if you would like to teach your students the truly big picture of the Bible, and show them how God has been at work in his people since before creation, you will find God’s Great Covenant to be a unique, surprising, and excellent Bible curriculum. The Bible, taught chronologically, by means of simple and direct stories, chants, and meditation on God’s character define God’s Great Covenant. Even many adults find themselves learning new facts, making surprising connections, and being blessed by reminder of God’s faithfulness, and how he always keeps his promises. Taught from a covenantal and reformed theological perspective, and rooted in Scripture, you will find this series to be a blessing to your classroom or family.
###

Here is a sample of the book on OT and here is a sample of the book on the NT. Other samples are available (e.g. teachers guide, and schedule). You can purchase Larsen's books here

One other resource I haven't spent a lot of time with, but like what I see is Starr Meade's The Most Important Thing You'll Every Study View sample pages of volume one by Clicking here.

A Response to Arminians David Baggett and Jerry Walls

10/26/2012 - Alan Kurschner

"In their recent book Good God: The Theistic Foundations of Morality (Oxford 2011), David Baggett and Jerry Walls have a chapter attacking Calvinism on allegedly philosophical grounds. Jerry Walls may well be the leading Arminian philosopher of his generation. So this chapter presumably represents the best philosophical case against Calvinism from an Arminian perspective." Today on a Skype Based DL from Detroit

10/25/2012 - James White

Snuck in a Skype based DL from Detroit today. Talked about the possibility of taking the DL to ABN as well for a bi-weekly program, and the needs we would have to meet to be able to do so (see the blog entry below). Then we took calls on a wide variety of subjects, but mainly in reference to God's sovereignty in human affairs. Here's the program.

The Dividing Line on ABN?

10/25/2012 - James White

We have the opportunity to partner with ABN (www.abnsat.com) to provide a bi-weekly primetime television version of the Dividing Line hosted by yours truly. Many of you have enjoyed my appearances on ABN, and now in talking with Dr. Gorial, the head of ABN, he has asked if I would be willing to fly to Detroit regularly to host my own program. We would do a live broadcast and then record broadcasts at the same time for future airing (so I would only be flying to Detroit every other month). Yes, I know it would be a time commitment, but I am willing to do it if the people of God who support us make it possible. For the first year I would estimate that the flights, hotel, rental car, etc., would cost right at $5,000.00. We are putting this opportunity forward to our readers and supporters and will only pursue it if God's people indicate their support for it. Please pray that the Lord's purpose will be made clear to us. If you would like to donate toward this work, a link is provided below.

Puritans, Prison, & Privilege

10/25/2012 - Jeff Downs

A few weeks ago I watched a video from a rap artist by the name Propaganda. The rap was critical of the Puritans, and an exhortation for those who enjoy reading and using Puritan writings. Well, Grand Master Puritan (aka. Dr. Joel Beeke), put his fingers to the keys, and responded to Propaganda with post titled Propaganda: Giving the Puritans a Bad Rap. Read it.

And after reading his post go here and purchase the new A Puritan Theology: Doctrine for Life by Joel Beeke and Mark Jones.

While sitting in Hebrew class (during break) this morning, Lowell Ivey, surprised, leaned forward to show me a post over at Feeding on Christ that was about him. Of course, I could not not read it in class but looked at it later. You will be bless when you make your way over here and read this brothers testimony. Lowell and I have similar backgrounds, but better yet, Christ has set both us free in so many ways! It is a privilege to know Lowell.

Speaking of Rap, here is one rap worth listening to. I tear up every time I hear it (I'm sure Lowell, and some of you would as well).

btw: Just in case you are wondering (and to make it clear), the "Grand Master" title, has nothing to do with the KKK or Masonic Lodge. In the Urban culture, it is a title given to the best rappers. In the case of Dr. Joel Beeke, he is the Grand Master of Puritan writings.

Exodus-Revelation, on Genesis

10/24/2012 - Jeff Downs

Tomorrow evening (10/25) starting at 7pm at Second Pres., Greenville, SC, Dr. Joseph Pipa will be speaking on the topic "What the rest of the Bible says about Genesis." This lecture will be broadcast live on the internet. I'm assuming the feed will begin shortly before start time. To watch it live click here. I would encourage all of you to tune in.

Dr. Pipa is co-editor and co-author of Did God Create in 6 Days?, which I think is still one of the best books on this issue. The content of the book is edited papers presented at this conference.

Brother Jack's "Sermon" on a Radio Free Geneva Today on the Dividing Line

10/16/2012 - James White

Well, I had been told "Brother Jack" was calling in today, but alas---the phones were silent. But that didn't keep me from spending 100 minutes on the topic, playing, and responding to, the entirety of this "sermon" that is founded upon a dogmatic dedication to 1) a hatred of the truths of the doctrines of grace, and 2) the denial that God has any purpose to produce a holy people united to Jesus Christ. If you want to see how perverted a view the Wilkins/Chay type of "no repentance in salvation" kind of teaching can produce, well, "Brother Jack" gives you quite the view. Here's the program.

Also, I forgot to blog last Thursday's program (since I was traveling and, evidently, I am the only one with access to the blog! < g >). We had an important discussion of the recent study showing that "Protestants" are now less than 50% of the US population, and I discussed how the "Nones" are now 20%, and what this means for evangelism and apologetics. Then we went back to Paul Williams' comments, almost finishing off his opening statement. Here's the program.

Tomorrow's DL will be...Radio Free Geneva!

10/15/2012 - James White

Remember Brother Jack's (now private) video "sermon" explaining why I am going to hell (and why I'm a jerk, an idiot, stupid, etc.)? Well, I was told this morning that he is going to call the program tomorrow so, I listened to his entire presentation while riding today and decided that with a bit of effort I can, in fact, make something educational out of what is otherwise an amazing example of nearly cultic thinking. So we will cover his entire presentation and then invite him to be our guest to expand on any points and answer some questions. 2pm EDT, 11am MDT, see you then!

The Doctrine of Man (2013 Conference)

10/10/2012 - Jeff Downs

Save the dates my friends! You are not going to want to miss the next GPTS Spring Theology Conference, March 12-14, 20013.

"Reformer John Calvin wrote that the two most important things for any person to know are who God is and who man is. In order to know God properly, one must know the truth about himself.

In our day, there is much confusion about who man is. Is the Bible correct that God made man in His image from the dust of the earth and Eve from the side of Adam, or is it possible, as some "Reformed" theologians have suggested, that Adam and Eve were made from primal hominids or that Adam was the head of a large people-group or tribe? Was there human death before the Fall? What role do the creation mandates have in the church today?

Because of the seriousness of these questions and others concerning mankind, the faculty and trustees of Greenville Seminary are devoting our 2013 Spring Theology Conference to the study of what the Bible says about man."

Speakers and topics are as follows:

Dr. Richard Belcher — "The Supernatural Creation of Man" (including examination of modern theories of theistic evolution)

Dr. Guy Waters — "The Covenant of Works"

Dr. Joel Beeke — "Temptation and Fall" (free Tuesday evening service)

Mr. Matthew Holst — "Death Before the Fall?"

Mr. Bill Vandoodewaard — "Thomas Boston and the Four-fold State"

Dr. Nelson Kloosterman — "Imago Dei – Man, the Image of God"

Dr. Joseph Pipa — "Original Sin" (free Wednesday evening service)

Dr. Nelson Kloosterman — "The Cultural Mandate and the Great Commission – An Integrationist Model"

Mr. Gabriel Fluhrur — "Beware Lest Any Man Spoil You: Questioning the Philosophy of Science Used to Question the Bible's Doctrine of Man"

Toward the end of the year, the GPTS Site should have further information.

Corrupt Police Officers, Open-Air Preaching, and Christians Losing Their Rights in America

10/07/2012 - Alan Kurschner

Some members of my church joined other believers yesterday in open-air preaching in Jersey City. They were wrongly shut down by the authorities who accused them of attempting to stir up a riot, which was patently untrue. Their rights were clearly violated by lying, corrupt police officers. Speaking to one of the individuals who participated yesterday, he told me police officers are becoming increasingly intolerant toward Christians in recent months, disregarding their rights to free speech, falsifying reports, and even combative.

Pray that their citations will be overturned at their hearing. Our time is short to proclaim Christ to the lost.

Today on the Dividing Line

10/02/2012 - James White

Talked briefly about California outlawing offering hope to young homosexuals as a wonderful example of what I've been saying for decades now: homosexuals do not want equal rights, they want uber rights. And leftist politicians will sell their souls to anyone with a large enough donation, so voila! "Law." You know what? Law loses its compelling force with men of morals and ethics when it becomes capricious and devoid of truth. Just something to keep in mind. Anyway, we then took questions on a wide variety of issues, including faith as a gift of God, and then I closed with some more thoughts on the last debate we had in London. Here's the program.
