Quick Note

07/30/2006 - James White

Preached on the view of God's Word regarding homosexuality and the pro-homosexual movement at PRBC both services Sunday. When the sermons are posted, they will be here.
Pray for the safety of our offices. Someone smashed out my wife's passenger side window Thursday evening when she was here, right out in the parking lot. Left a six inch knife in her passenger seat. The police don't even bother showing up for that kind of thing anymore around here. We are looking at trying to obtain some security equipment to keep an eye on the parking lot.
Shamgar gave me this link in channel today, and it truly amazes me the power CAIR wields in our land. Truth lies wounded in the streets indeed. Western civilization seems completely intent upon self-destruction. Perhaps someone will finally start talking about the wrath of God?

John 6 and the "Pristine Faith Restoration Society" (#2)

07/28/2006 - James White

The primary reason for addressing Tim Warner's arguments on the subject of John 6 is found in the assertions made therein regarding the exegesis of the text. Each time examples can be provided of errors in exegesis, it is hoped our readers will be better equipped to detect such mistakes in a wider variety of contexts.
As noted before, Mr. Warner has adopted a particular kind of "progressive dispensationalism" that allows him to cut the New Testament (and the Bible) up into sections that are then said to be no longer relevant today. So, if Jesus uses a present tense verb during His ministry, and the specific situation of His ministry has now "changed," that present tense verb, if it has to do with the peculiar understanding adopted of Jesus' ministry, can be said to be irrelevant now, since it only had to do with what was happening then. The result of such thinking will be seen in specifics below.
At times it is difficult to follow Warner's reasoning. He writes,
Jesus indicated that He, like Moses, was sent by God. His confirmation of this fact to the Jews was that His own flesh was to be given for their spiritual food (as the manna was given for their physical food). Partaking of Jesus' flesh was a cryptic way of saying that one must partake of Christ's sacrifice of His flesh in a spiritual sense, as the Israelites partook of the manna in a physical sense (see vss. 60-63). Jesus was teaching an important truth here in parable. It had nothing to do with being the "bread of life throughout all ages." That is purely Mr. White's assumption that he has read into the text with zero support from the context. I hope you can see the logical fallacy committed here by Mr. White. His circular argument goes like this: He assumes a universal truth (Jesus is the bread of life throughout all ages). He reads that back into the text solely on the basis that Jesus called Himself the "bread of life" (without any reference to "throughout all ages" — the critical point of his argument). He then claimed that Jesus was teaching this alleged universal truth, which Jesus nowhere hinted at!

It would seem to follow that only the Jews of Jesus' day could be saved by partaking of Christ's sacrifice of His flesh---but, of course, that makes no sense, since Jesus spoke these words before the cross; but, if we remember John wrote these words decades later, and the truth Jesus spoke then is valid in that context, then we have no problems. And that, of course, is all I have been saying. There is nothing in the text to tell us that Jesus only meant His words to be relevant to Jews in Capernaum at a particular time. This is Warner's imposition, one he seemingly wishes to be able to assert without proof. But when the result of your imposition is absurdity, one has warrant to reject the position being espoused. ...

Notorious James White: Dirty Debater

07/28/2006 - James White

A few moments ago Chris Arnzen forwarded me some correspondence that had developed today. To make Chris happy, I have (are you all sitting down?) actually updated the calendar page. I am sorry that page is so...humorous (it is normally more a historical run down of last year's events than anything else), but I find it very time consuming to do both the blog and a calendar page. Anyway, I just added Chris' announcement of the time, location, etc., of my upcoming intramural debate with my good brother in Christ, Pastor Bill Shishko of the Franklin Square Orthodox Presbyterian Church on Long Island (and a second about my yearly trek to visit the folks in St. Louis at Covenant of Grace Church).
Evidently, someone on one of the lists Chris posted the debate announcement to took exception. He responded,
Ugh. James White is by far one of the most dirty debaters I've ever seen.
Chris immediately asked him to back up what he had said, and he replied,
You sound like a fan. I've listened to recorded debates. When things aren't going his way, he turns into a baby. He uses slight-of-hand techniques, buckshot apologetics, baiting, etc. All these things dirty debaters use.
At this point I wrote to the gentleman, named Brian Atwood, to ask him to please back up his statements. This was his response:
Wow. I've caught the attention of the notorious James White. I would be happy to, James. It's not slander, by the way. It's clearly an opinion. But I will gladly show an example of a sleight-of-hand technique that you used. It was a debate over the Greek word kecharitomene. I apologize that I can't recall the name of the Catholic apologist you debated against, but you probably do.
The topic of the argument was that kecharitomene proved Mary's sinlessness. It plain and simply does. The argument is irrefutable. However, in an article you wrote on your website, you switched words hoping no one would notice. Since you had no argument on the fact that kacharitomene means "sinlessness", you substituted the root of the word which means "grace". Without the prefix and suffix, charitoo does mean "grace". However, the root of the word was not the topic of the debate. With the prefix ke and the suffix mene included, charitoo does mean "sinlessness". That is what I mean by a sleight-of-hand technique. My opinion holds.

On Thursday's DL

07/27/2006 - James White

I did as I predicted and reviewed the interview of John Shelby Spong by Barry Lynn, and then took a useful call on a new Watchtower publication's comments on Matthew 24:36. Here is the program.

The Wicket Gate

07/27/2006 - James White

I hope to find the time today to get another post in the John 6 series up. This morning I listened to Barry Lynn interviewing John Shelby Spong while riding. That was a bit tough, as you can imagine, but enlightening as well. I have a feeling I will review that on the DL today, since it is always easier to discuss something that is fresh on your mind.
While waiting for the Dividing Line, you might wish to listen to this series on the five points by Nick Needham, pastor of the Reformed Baptist Church in Inverness, Scotland. I have spoken a few times at the church in Inverness, and love the folks there. In fact, ironically, I wrote the first portions of my replies to Ergun Caner on the Founder's Blog on a computer in the home of one of the church members there in Inverness while I was visiting during the afternoon between services. Dr. Needham is a church historian, and you might find his other lectures most useful, including lectures on Athanasius, John Knox, etc., found here, and some (but I notice not all) of his published books are found here. Dr. Needham is a wonderful brother in the Lord, and has taken over pastoring the Inverness Church upon the retirement of Jack Seaton. Jack and his wife have been most kind to me in my visits to Inverness, and I had the pleasure of seeing the Seatons while speaking at the Metropolitan Tabernacle a few weeks ago. Jack took me to see Loch Ness when I first visited there, for which I am most thankful. You might recognize Pastor Seaton's name from his Banner of Truth booklet on the Five Points. It has been an honor to get to know such a wonderful, godly man. I look forward to returning to Inverness in the not too distant future.

John 6 and the "Pristine Faith Restoration Society"

07/26/2006 - James White

Last week I received a note chiding me for not responding to a man named Tim Warner, a "progressive dispensationalist" who is likewise anti-Reformed. I had noted his attempts to deal with key texts quite a while back. He replied, and the writer was chiding me for noting Hunt's unwillingness to debate while I had not replied to Warner. Of course, I pointed out there is no parallel: I have commented on Warner's dispensationalism and the over-riding role it takes in his commentary resulting in eisegetical errors in John 6 and elsewhere. I do not have to commit myself to a never ending series of give and take articles with every unusual interpretive system that finds a voice on the Internet, and this is particularly true with the wide range of "dispensationalisms" that are developing as the movement shatters into a thousand different streams.
In any case, I looked at the articles, and have chosen to respond, not so that another endless series of articles can be produced, but because I see value in illustrating when tradition (in this case, some kind of "progressive dispensationalism") distorts exegesis resulting in error. This is surely the case here, especially, as we will see in time, when the writer completely robs the believer of his assurance of salvation by torturing the Greek subjunctive into something even the sources he cites admits it is not. But I do not have so much extra time as to be exhaustive in this response. I will have to focus upon the key issues.
First, it is not fairly dealing with the historical context of John 6 to force some kind of unique dispensational "spin" on the text. The historical context is that of Judaism in the first century in Capernaum, not an artificial construct produced by a particular interpretation of "progressive dispensationalism." Mr. Warner confuses the two in his first response, found here. It should be noted that this kind of dispensational hermeneutic would mean that nothing before the cross--no teaching, no example, no command--could be seen as having any enduring quality. It is this kind of application of an over-arching concept that has given rise to every form of dispensational abuse of the text, such as is seen in the "Paul Only" churches where nothing but the writings of Paul are allowed to speak with authority to the church.
The issues addressed by our Lord in the Synagogue at Capernaum were over-arching and remain valid to this day. He was addressing unbelief. He was addressing men who had listened to him teaching for hours on end the day before. And yet, despite hearing, they did not believe. Despite seeing (the miracle), they continued in unbelief. Despite "seeking" Jesus, He explains they are unbelievers. And it is in that context that He explains who comes to Him and who does not. There is not a hint that this has anything to do with a particular hardening of Israel so that the crucifixion could take place. There is not a hint that what Jesus says about the nature of unbelief, of the drawing of the Father, and of Himself as the very center of Christian experience, our life-blood, the giver of spiritual life, is only true for the brief period of time left before the crucifixion, at which time all of this was going to change anyway. And what a wonder that the Holy Spirit would record these words for us and preserve them when they would have little or no meaning for the church as a whole. So while Mr. Warner says I am committing the error of eisegesis "because he is assuming a universal application when the text does not warrant or demand such," the reality is that I am simply listening to the text in the context in which it was given without presupposing some kind of dispensational hermeneutic that inserts extraneous conclusions into the discussion. Unbelief, the drawing of the Father, Christ as the bread from heaven, and the strong demands of discipleship are all just as relevant today as they were in Capernaum, and it is Mr. Warner that has to demonstrate otherwise. He consistently fails to do so. ...

A Spurgeon Seminar in Rio Rico, AZ

07/25/2006 - James White

For those in the Arizona area, Phil Johnson will be doing a Spurgeon Seminar in Rio Rico (about 17 miles from the Mexican border) October 28-29, 2006. Here's the info. I would love to hear Phil speak on his favorite subject, even more so now that I've been to the Metropolitan Tabernacle. If you are not headed to Orlando for the Pulpit Crimes Conference, the Spong debate, and the cruise, then consider running down to Rio Rico. It should be beautiful down there this time of year.

Back to Normal on the DL

07/25/2006 - James White

Very nice to have the full crew on hand (that amounts to two folks) for the Dividing Line today, and we spent the entire time on phone calls. Discussed sola scriptura and some of my past debates with Patrick Madrid and Gerry Matatics, then discussed a little bit about hyper-preterism and Luke 21, and finally closed with a call on Luther and the bondage of the will. Was nice to have phone calls again! May get back to our review of Mr. Montignoni's "refutation" of "once saved, always saved" on Thursday. Here's the program.

And Just When You Thought Da Vinci Went Away

07/24/2006 - James White

According to The Independent, a British news paper, Simon and Schuster is dumping a quarter million into a marketing promotion for a book by an American woman, 43, named Kathleen McGowan, who claims...are you sitting down?...to be "a direct descendant of the physical union between Mary Magdalene and Jesus Christ." Of course, she has received a seven figure sum for the rights to her book as well. She says she offers no proof of her heritage, but claims to have traced her geneaology to an "ancient French lineage that claimed to trace its roots to the pair." Well, isn't that special?
I would like to think this kind of bald-faced absurdity would boomerang on Simon and Schuster and they would lose their shirts on this silliness, but given the level of absurdity inherent in The DaVinci Code to begin with, I have a hard time coming up with that kind of optimism in the human ability to exercise discernment in such areas. One thing is for sure: all that money will not help Kathleen McGowan when she stands before the God she used as a foil for obtaining "filthy lucre."

While On Your Way to Church

07/22/2006 - James White

Sometimes I take a little trip through a residential area to avoid a bad corner on my way to the office. This morning as I went through this area I glanced at the thermometer and saw it was reading 111 degrees at only 10am. The thought crossed my mind, "I wonder if Jehovah's Witnesses are out in this furnace?" I turned a corner and what did I see? An entire group of JW's. And there, rolling up to someone's door, three JW's led by...a man in a wheelchair. Remember, it's 111. I know, the "official" temperature was probably only 107 or so, but, that's in the shade, and that man in the chair was not in the shade. I looked down the road and saw the inevitable van heading their way. They were at the end of their "service ministry." I wondered when they had started.
In case you are thinking I am going to try to do the "look at what those trapped in false religion will do for a lie while so many blessed with so much truth in Christ waste their lives satisfying their own personal desires" thing--while that is all quite true, that's not where I'm going. Instead, my thoughts turned to a phrase I have used a number of times on this blog, "Theology matters." I look at those folks going door to door spreading a message of...what? They do not believe they are "in" Christ. They have no heavenly hope, they are not in the New Covenant, they do not stand justified in the righteousness of Christ, they have no sure promise of final salvation. They truly have nothing more than a second-class salvation system.
What about you? Most of my readers have been blessed to be part of a sound, biblical fellowship of believers. You may be going today, or just now returning from, a church where the gospel--in purity, in truth--was proclaimed this day. So let me ask you, because I know all too well how it is: how much did you rejoice in that gospel this day? Did you consider the glory of being redeemed, forgiven, freely, so that you are the blessed man or woman of Romans 4:7-8? Or were you distracted by...so many of those things that get in our way of rejoicing in what is truly important? Got cut off on the way to church? Got a late start because [fill in the blank] just can't get out the door on time no matter how early he/she gets up? Upset because Mr. X or Mrs. Y said something snippy to you on the way into Bible Study? Thinking so much about duties next week you could not even hear the sermon after the first 90 seconds? No, I wasn't following you around. Been there, done that, got the t-shirt.
The ease with which we are distracted from worship says a lot about how much we really love the gospel. If we treasure it so that it defines us and has captured our hearts, will we not rejoice in its proclamation, revel in contemplating its truths? How often we lose so much blessing because we are so earthly minded!
So as you go to church today, rejoice that you are not enslaved to a system that would have you proving your worthiness to Jehovah in a wheel chair in the Arizona sun. And pray God's Spirit will aid you in worshipping God in spirit and in truth this day.

Berean Call Statement, January, 2005

07/21/2006 - James White

It has been a while, so I had forgotten some of the details of what The Berean Call had said about the "Hebrew original" claims Hunt makes in his book. One of our channel regulars sent me the letter TBC had sent him on the topic, and it reminded me of just how embarrassing this situation is for Hunt, and how amazing it is that they have put out another edition of the book but kept this silliness in the text. The utter lack of integrity in research and scholarship demonstrated by TBC when it comes to Calvinism sadly reflects upon everything they put out. Hunt has truly done irreparable damage to his legacy and integrity with his bull-headed crusade against sound biblical theology.
Now for those who may be new to this blog and this discussion, Dave Hunt has been on an anti-Calvinism crusade for a number of years now. He's written a horrible book, filled with exegetical errors and the most egregious forms of misrepresentation and illogic, titled What Love is This? This despite being warned he was engaging a topic he is not prepared to engage by many people (myself included), and the fact that his website includes in his bio this statement, "Dave’s impeccable research and recognized scholarship are based on in depth studies of original documents and publications, interviews with key experts from around the world, and extensive travel—including to South America, Australia, Europe and throughout the Middle East." One thing is for certain, when it comes to Reformed theology, Dave didn't bother with the "impeccable research."
One of Dave's big hurdles has been dealing with Acts 13:48. He has tried everything. A comparison of his first attempts with his current explanation shows a sad desperation on his part. The text simply defies his many attempts to get around it. In his original edition of What Love is This?, despite his public admission that he cannot read Greek (as he put it, "It might as well be Chinese!"), he had the audacity to write, "Many Greek experts suggest the same idea here: that the Gentiles had disposed themselves (i.e., determined) to believe" (p. 218). Of course, he doesn't bother to list these "Greek experts," and as we shall see, this is a common defect of Hunt's writings. Of course, the rendering he proposes is found in only one English translation in its main text: the New World Translation of Jehovah's Witnesses! Evidently Hunt was unaware of this, for he has continued trying to come up with new ways around this text in the more recent editions of his book and in his various talks as he travels the country and the world.
In any case, in the hardback edition his own ministry eventually put out (Multnomah wisely declined to publish it---an act that Hunt blames upon the great Calvinist conspiracy!), a paragraph appeared that had not been in the previous edition of WLIT? It is the final paragraph in the section on Acts 13:48 (pp. 263-264). It is not introduced with, "Oh, by the way, here is some irrelevant speculation." In fact, there is nothing in the text to indicate you are not to take it as being just as serious as anything else in Hunt's book. It reads,
The Dead Sea Scrolls, as well as comments from early church writers, indicate that the first 15 chapters of Acts were probably written first in Hebrew. The Greek would be a translation. Some scholars claim that going back to a "redacted Hebrew" version, based upon word-for-word Greek-Hebrew equivalents, would render Acts 13:48 more like "as many as submitted to, needed, or wanted salvation, were saved." Furthermore, even if "ordained" were the correct meaning, these Greeks still would have had to believe the gospel and accept Christ by an act of their own faith and will, as all of Scripture testifies.

I remember doing a double-take as soon as I saw this the first time. It was so far removed from anything even semi-scholarly that I was shocked even Dave Hunt would put it into use. Did he not realize this would present almost insurmountable difficulties for the doctrine of inerrancy, maybe even inspiration itself? Is there anything he won't say to protect his traditions from biblical refutation? It did not take long to document all of the silliness, and of course, TBC could not back up Hunt's claims. In a major mis-step, his ministry started sending out an e-mail that plagiarized directly from a cultic website seeking to defend the idea of a Hebrew original, and even then, the quotes were only relevant to Matthew, not to Acts. Eventually Hunt realized the case was hopeless. So did he admit he was wrong? Well, not really. Here are the key statements from a letter Hunt sent out in response to the issue in January, 2005:
It is a bit embarrassing because I threw in the comments to which you take exception (and rightly so) rather carelessly. It was certainly not part of my argument nor did it have any bearing on the position I take.
I offer no footnotes for this brief paragraph because the source or sources are not important and frankly I can't remember where I picked up these ideas. The phrases "were probably written" and "some scholars claim" show that I am not presenting my own opinion gathered from personal research. I am only stating (as something of possible interest for anyone who may wish to pursue it further) that certain people believe this idea. My argument, however, is in no way dependent upon such opinions.
Certainly, any basis for the idea that the first 15 chapters of Acts were originally written in Hebrew is tenuous at best---but that doesn't matter. The fact that some people (including some scholars) believe this to be the case is all that I stated, but it is clearly not relevant to my arguments. It was not wise to include this brief speculative statement and it will be deleted from the next printing.
May I rephrase Hunt's words? I mean, I'm a fellow author and apologist, so I think I can approximate it pretty well.
Whoa, where did that come from? Yeah, sure, that's my book, but I really take no responsibility for what appears in it. But hey, keep one thing in mind: no matter how false that paragraph really is, it doesn't impact my arguments at all. I mean, no amount of error in my argumentation can possibly change the fact that I am right. Never forget that. No, I can't even remember where I got that stuff, though, I sure did give some specifics, didn't I? I mean, I mentioned stuff about which I'm actually totally clueless, since I don't read the original languages, and referred to early church fathers--no, I've forgotten who they were, too--and scholars--no, please, I just don't recall even though I put this edition out just recently so it was only a few months ago that I put this together but amazingly, despite my "impeccable research," I haven't a clue what scholars these might be nor do I have any idea where you could actually see this Hebrew version or anything else. And what does it really matter, really? I mean, just because throughout the rest of my book I mention "scholars" and "dozens of verses" and such things, without documenting my claims, doesn't mean that those references are not absolutely true and factual! It's just this one little paragraph that you shouldn't take seriously, and remember, no matter what you say about this paragraph, it means nothing to my arguments. Nothing. My arguments are infallible, err, I mean, are accurate and well researched. In fact, did you know I know more about Calvinism than most Calvinists do? It's true. And I learned it all in a matter of weeks! Hey, have you ever heard of Servetus? Let me tell you about Servetus....
When you have to write to someone and say, "Well, I did not footnote this section because it really doesn't matter, you should know that you have really gotten in over your head. Sad, very sad.
But, please notice the last line. Hunt says the material will be removed from the next printing. Has it been removed, even from the next edition? Answer: no. Evidently, removing simply false material that is misleading and damaging and downright silly is not nearly as important as saving the world from Calvinism! Dave's had time to put out another anti-Calvinism book since January, 2005, but he has somehow not found the time to fix his own faux pax let alone debate the issue.

Hello Ed and the Folks at The Berean Call!

07/20/2006 - James White

A friend of mine contacted the folks at TBC about the DL today. The response was most interesting:
Thank you for bringing this to our attention. We constantly monitor White's website and are well acquainted with his statements. In response to White's question as to whether the statement about Acts 13:48 was left in, it has.
A couple of things. First, Ed Newby was the fellow who wrote this. I've seen his name on almost everything forwarded to me from TBC, so I guess he handles the correspondence. Hi Ed! Ed seems like a nice guy. I would not want his job. I bet Ed would like to see Dave debate me. I have no evidence of this. Just reading between the lines. :-)
Second, I am a bit amazed that such a massive error as the "Hebrew original of Acts 1-15" paragraph, which has been so thoroughly refuted, would remain in another printing of the book. I guess they assume that most of their readers will never know the difference (a sad but probably true idea). But remember, there is no way to uphold the doctrine of inerrancy and claim the first fifteen chapters of Acts were written in Hebrew and have now been lost! The fact that Hunt does not care about misleading his readers with this kind of falsehood (a falsehood his ministry then attempted to defend for weeks by sending out quotes taken from a cultic website!) simply because it aids him in attacking Calvinism tells you a lot about the power of human traditions.
Third, I do hope Ed and the folks will listen to the DL and introduce Dave and T.A. to the concept of "common grace." Somehow, when Dave came to know more about Calvinism than most Calvinists (as is his own claim) he missed all those references.

Dave Hunt Weighed and Found Wanting

07/20/2006 - James White

Second solo run and amazingly enough, I got through it again! Played a clip from Dave Hunt demonstrating that once again he simply refuses to either "hear" or is so controlled by his traditions that he cannot hear. In either case, he is far from being able to speak the truth on the matter of Calvinism. Then we continued with our review of Mr. Martignoni and his "refutation" of "once saved, always saved." Here's the program.

The Terrorist Tactics of the Homosexual Jihad

07/19/2006 - James White

Anyone who invests almost any time at all in following groups like SoulForce knows that the homosexual movement uses some of the most egregious forms of intimidation and fallacious argumentation to be seen in the American scene today. I was looking at one of their publications just now, and saw this paragraph:
Let me make something absolutely clear: I do not consider Dr. Dobson my enemy. Misunderstanding is the enemy. We are both children of the same loving Creator, and I genuinely appreciate the many ways he has helped heterosexual families around the globe. I enjoy listening to his radio program, and I believe he has a sincere heart with an unmatched passion for nurturing and protecting families. But gays and lesbians form loving families too, and his spiritual violence against us must stop. [source]
If you dare bring biblical truth to bear upon the topic of sexual sin, you are engaging in "spiritual violence." Just like the inane term "homophobia," such rhetoric is meant to intimidate while raising emotional barriers to rational thought. It is highly prejudicial language without the slightest bit of rational foundation. How is it "spiritual violence" to say, "God's Word defines what a loving relationship is; when we knowingly, purposefully violate His revealed will for us as our Creator, we cannot call the resultant relationship we create 'loving' because it is based upon rebellion against God and hence can only be self-centered instead of God-centered. Such relationships can only be destructive, not nurturing"? If this is a true statement, then is it not the case that the other side is engaging in violence against the truth to suppress my right to speak this truth? And make no mistake: they want to take away my right to say that.
God, as our Creator, determines what is loving and what is not. Jesus left little doubt:
3 Some Pharisees came to Jesus, testing Him and asking, "Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife for any reason at all?" 4 And He answered and said, "Have you not read that He who created them from the beginning MADE THEM MALE AND FEMALE, 5 and said, 'FOR THIS REASON A MAN SHALL LEAVE HIS FATHER AND MOTHER AND BE JOINED TO HIS WIFE, AND THE TWO SHALL BECOME ONE FLESH '? 6 "So they are no longer two, but one flesh. What therefore God has joined together, let no man separate."
God made men male and female. God defines sexuality. The family is made up of "father and mother," not "father and father" or "mother and mother." The man leaves this family unit, is joined to his wife, not his "significant other," not his "long-term partner," and the two become one flesh. This is the union God blesses, this is the only way two people become "one flesh." God does not join anyone else together in any other fashion. There is no question about Jesus' intention; no question about the context; no question about the consistency of this teaching with the Scripture that came before, and what comes after. There is no question about how Christians have viewed this subject historically, either.
Only modern revisionists have problems seeing these texts, or, more to the point, being obedient to them. And their arguments are normally so pathetic that the only way to make them believable is to place them within the emotional context created by cries of "violence!" and "homophobia!" Someone who can be stirred by such irrational clamour is not likely to look too closely at the reasoning behind the gay advocate's claims. That is why the one tiny section in the above cited source relating to the Bible is utterly vacuous and without substance: you don't have to come up with much once you've turned off the rational faculties with repeated references to how homosexual "couples" are loving and anyone who says otherwise is hateful. Of course, the fact that the vast majority of homosexuals have never, ever, ever been monogamous is missed by this kind of rhetoric, but that is another subject.
As I look forward to the upcoming debate with John Shelby Spong I am once again convinced that this debate will be representative of the struggle we will all be facing in our culture with greater regularity in the future. Indeed, even today, unless one has already adopted the "silent Christian" posture, you cannot help but have to address God's right to determine what is proper human behavior.

Can Dave Hunt Ever Learn or Admit Error?

07/19/2006 - James White

After all these years, I've had to conclude that he cannot. No matter how often he is corrected, evidently, he has no ears to hear. And despite his saying that he has nothing more to say about Calvinism, he continues writing books, talking about it on his radio program, etc. Remember, Dave Hunt has a standing challenge to debate this issue, but he simply will not do so.
If you check out his website, you will see that yet another version of What Love is This? has been released. I can't tell from the description if the embarrassing "Hebrew original of Acts" stuff has been removed, and I don't know that I want to spend the $27 to find out (if anyone else does, please let me know). If that has not been removed, well, that says volumes in and of itself. But if it has, without notation or explanation---well, that speaks loudly as well.
Tomorrow on the DL, before we get back to our Roman Catholic apologist's attack on "once saved, always saved" (the fellow who has eaten my lunch!), I wish to respond to a recent Huntian demonstration of his utter, culpable, obstinate, and pertinacious ignorance of Reformed theology, leading, inexorably, to his continued misrepresentation thereof. You can listen to it yourself here. Just don't do so if you have blood pressure issues, or before going to bed.

My First Solo Run on the Dividing Line!

07/18/2006 - James White

As shocked as some of you might be, not only did I manage to get through today's Dividing Line (yes, I know, the server crashed ten minutes before the end---nothing I could do about that), but I have managed to properly convert files, connect to proper servers, upload the right files, rename the right urls, etc., and here is today's DL! When theologians can manage to do this kind of stuff, well, the world is definitely on its last legs. Anyway, today we listened to a few more of the questions and answers from the Patterson/Mohler discussion at the SBC, and then I began working on a Roman Catholic's discussion of "once saved, always saved."

Yes, Theology Matters

07/17/2006 - James White

One of our channel regulars, Phileas, posted a URL in channel this morning that caught my attention. The following statements all came from one individual. Don't cheat and scroll down to find out who. Read them first, then follow the link.
God is first and foremost an all loving Father, and any theology which fails to recognize this, in an attempt to maintain the sovereignty of God, is betraying everything that is best in the Christian tradition. Luther dimly recognized this, and attempted, although often unsatisfactorily, to stress the love of God. But not so with Calvin. It is justice and power that are prominent in Calvin's God. The God of the Genevan reformer was a monster of iniquity. He was so bent on justice that he possessed no conscience. He was so concerned about being respected and glorified that He found in Himself neither glory nor respect for men. When men become servants of such a God, they may be expected to set flame to the faggots piled high about the body of a Servetus or preach the sermon of Jonathan Edwards, "Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God."
Hence, we must affirm that Christ is a unitary personality, and this unity we find in his own ego. There is nothing in rational speculation nor New Testament thought to warrant the view that Jesus had two personal centers. We must then think of Christ as a unitary being whose divinity consists not in any second nature or in a substantial unity with God, but in a unique and potent God consciousness. His unity of {with} God was a unity of purpose rather than a unity of substance.
Concerning the work of Christ the two reformers stressed a substitutionary theory of atonement. They maintained that Christ actually took the place of sinners in the sight of God, and as a substitutee suffered the punishment that was due to men. But all of this is based on a false view of personality. Merit and guilt are not transferable from one person to another. They are inalienable from personality. Moreover, on moral grounds, a person cannot be punished in the place of another.
Another weakness in this theory of atonement is that it is based on the assumption that the chief obstacle to man's redemption is in the nature of God. But there was never any obstacle to man's redemption in God himself. The real obstacle to man's redemption has always lain in man himself. It is from this standpoint, therefore, that the death of Christ is to be interpreted. Christ's death was not a ransom, or a penal substitute, or a penal example, rather it was a revelation of the sacrificial love of God intended to awaken an answering love in the hearts of men.
We are compelled, therefore, to reject the idea of a catastrophic fall and regard man's moral condition from another point of view. Man's fall is not due to some falling away from an original righteousness, but to a failure to rise to a higher level of his present existence.
In the same vein we must reject Luther's and Calvin's view that man is incapable of performing any saving good, and that man can do nothing to save himself. Certainly we must agree that the image of God is terribly scared in man, but not to the degree that man cannot move toward God.
A final doctrine of Luther and Calvin which needs to be critized is the doctrine of predestination. Any form of mechanical determinism is far from adequate for lasting Christian doctrine. The Kantian "I ought therefore I can" should stand out as a prelude in any Christian conception of man. Any attempt to maintain a doctrine of man devoid of freedom leads us into needless paradoxes.

So, we have someone who evidently is non-Trinitarian (if you deny the ontological deity of Christ and the Incarnation, you cannot be a Trinitarian), denies the substitutionary atonement of Christ, penal substitution, etc., (prefers a more governmental/moral theory of the atonement), denies man's deadness in sin, and simply detests the sovereignty of God, the concept of an eternal decree. Who is our mystery writer? ...

A Quick Note of Thanks

07/17/2006 - James White

I wanted to extend my sincere thanks to those of you who took the time to click on the "support us" link and join us as a regular supporter. We don't talk a lot about money around here--not because we are fully supported but just because I have never felt it went well with apologetics. We don't make marketing calls, we don't even have a regular mailing list either (I'm such a lousey marketer even back when we did whatever we sent out never paid for itself!). We trust that those who see that we engage in a unique ministry in a pretty unique way will likewise realize that given how small we are and given that we tend to be equal opportunity offenders that we need our (few) friends to stand with us. Every once in a while I need to mention that we are, in fact, supported by just a few churches and a small number of faithful supporters, and in general, I don't have to do that too often. But since new folks find out about us all the time, that's required. I happen to believe the folks who see the need for what we do happen to be some of the finest folks around, so I only have to mention our needs and faithful folks step up. So once again, I thank those who did so, and trust that if what we do here on this blog, on the DL, in the materials we publish, the debates we put on, etc., is a blessing to you, you will help us to keep moving forward.

Gordon Hinckley Hearkens Back to Old Time Mormonism While De-Emphasizing Human Exaltation

07/15/2006 - James White

When you go to www.lds.org today you will find a "First Presidency Message" from Gordon Hinckley, printed in the Ensign magazine, July, 2006. Since this is the current prophet writing, being published in the official church publications, and being recommended for use and discussion by home teachers, there is little ground upon which anyone can question that this is official teaching. Not Scripture, but official interpretation thereof, a clear exposition of the official position of the LDS Church. If the prophet can make this kind of statement for the First Presidency in the church's official publications and it still just be his "private opinion," there is really no logical way to determine what Mormonism actually believes or teaches any longer.
I found this message most interesting. In many ways, it is a re-affirmation of "old time Mormonism," those beliefs that some LDS seem to at least be embarrassed about today, and even to be waffling on, in some instances. Hinckley confirms, at least positively, the majority of what I presented in my book, Is the Mormon My Brother, though conspicuous by its absence is the historic emphasis upon man's own exaltation to the status of a god. Though this is not the specific subject of the message, that part would not have been missed sixty years ago. And at one point, it almost looks like an effort was made to avoid the topic. We read early on:
"It is the first principle of the gospel to know for a certainty the character of God" (History of the Church, 6:305).
Notice there is no period in the citation. That's because it is a partial sentence. Here's the whole thing:
It is the first principle of the Gospel to know for a certainty the Character of God, and to know that we may converse with him as one man converses with another, and that he was once a man like us; yea, that God himself, the Father of us all, dwelt on an earth, the same as Jesus Christ himself did" (King Follett Funeral Discourse).
The original emphasis in the cited text was upon the fact that God "was once a man like us," leading to the teaching that we may become gods like him. So while much of this statement seems to me to be aimed at Mormons who are speculating more and more about abandoning certain elements of LDS theology that are embarrassing (polytheism as a religious viewpoint is incoherent and self-contradictory in any form), it still reflects the modern situation where the emphasis has shifted, at least in Hinckley's official statements, away from the old-time LDS emphasis upon exaltation to godhood. What is clear is that Hinckley sees no room for Mormonism to adopt historic Christian beliefs regarding the unity of the Godhead on an ontological level. The plurality of gods stays, even if the corollary doctrine (exaltation) is not nearly as strongly asserted. Notice the following statement: ...

Friday Morning Odds and Ends

07/14/2006 - James White

Watching the news these days reminds me of how frightening it must be to not know God has a purpose He is working out in this world. The Mideast remains a mess, and, of course, will remain a mess until either the Lord returns or He grants repentance to a very large group of people. There is only one hope for that part of the world, and it is the gospel of Jesus Christ.
Next, did you know it is hot in Phoenix, Arizona. Predictions as high as 116 today. 122 is the all-time high, however---that is a little deceiving. They moved the thermometer at Sky Harbor after that record was reached June 26, 1990 (I remember it well), and most of us feel the new location reads about 3 degrees lower than it used to. Next, it is a lot more humid in Phoenix than it was 16 years ago. When it hit 122 in 1990 the humidity was almost non-existent. Not anymore! So 116 with four or five times the humidity of the 122 sure feels warmer than the 122 did. I rode South Mountain yesterday morning, and the starting temperature long before sunrise was 89. For the next two months I'll be doing more Spinervals (cycling video workouts that are really great) and rowing, both inside.
Nothing new on the Caner front. No response to the last e-mail I sent. Stephen Atkins up in Canada did get an e-mail response from Ergun that he posted on his blog that you might find interesting. Caner plays the Servetus card. Of course, he doesn't contextualize anything (nothing unusual about that). I wonder if he'd likewise admit his soteriology is foundationally more similar to Rome's than to the Reformers? His views of the decree of God, the will of man, and the nature of grace, are all far closer to Rome than they are to Geneva. Anyway, Ergun keeps trying to project the "We are fearless, the Calvinists are afraid" scenario. It is almost humorous in light of the fact that he has ignored, repeatedly, my challenge to him to go one-on-one in front of each of his classes at Liberty with nothing in our hands but the Bible. In fact, I'd challenge him to do that with nothing but a Greek text. I'd be overjoyed at the opportunity. Does that sound like I'm afraid? And why does he ignore this every time I raise the challenge? Seems he is hoping his "fans" won't be reading "the other side."
Finally, I just did a search on my blog. Mike Kwiatkowski addressed some comments by Dave Armstrong back in June of 2005, and aside from one passing mention of his name regarding Angelz' cartoons in September of last year, I haven't said a word about the man personally for over a year. I had removed his blog from my RSS feed long, long ago, mainly after I had invested the time to go through his claims in his book, document their errors, and challenge him to provide exegetical replies. His response? Well, a bit like putting a wax candle on your dashboard in Phoenix today: total melt-down. Complete capitulation. "I won't talk to anti-Catholics anymore!" Well, I knew that was all just a cover to allow him to hide long enough for the storm to pass, and that he'd be back. Guess what? Yeah, no big surprise. James Swan informs me ol' Dave is strutting about the Internet once again, sporting an ego the size of Mount Rushmore. This is the same Dave Armstrong who will not debate in person; the same one who melted into a puddle of goo when challenged in writing to defend his own published "exegesis." You truly have to wonder after a while, especially when the documentation of these things is still on line (just do a search on "Armstrong" down in the search box). How utterly self-deceived does a person have to be to have tucked tail and run in the face of serious challenge, and then, eighteen months later, has the temerity to write of me, "a man who has eventually (usually quite quickly) fled from every so-called debate he and I have ever engaged in?" What color is the sky in his world, anyway? That's just downright frightening. I think it is time to let Angelz' handiwork speak one more time.

07/13/2006 - James White

I thought this had been concluded. But I just returned from dinner to find more e-mails waiting for me, one of which demonstrates that Ergun Caner did not even bother to read the last one I sent him though he responded to it! I am simply dumbfounded, especially since Ergun's e-mail to Tom Ascol includes lines like this:
As for trustworthiness, which side chose to post private e-mails, even when admonished? I believe the problem, Dr. Ascol, is that the Reformed side has been given a “pass” for too long. When called on it- when faced with the option of actually defending this position, then you balk.
What part of "utterly disconnected from reality" is not getting through here? I feel like I'm in the Twilight Zone. Is it possible this explains why the majority of what I've written to the Caners has gone unanswered? They just did not even bother to read it? At this point, anything is possible. So while I thought this saga was "on hold" for a while, who knows what tomorrow will bring? I sure don't. So, I've updated the pdf again. Is there a maximum size to PDFs? I'm starting to wonder.

The Caner Saga: Episode MCLXVII: Revenge of the Synergists

07/13/2006 - James White

Maybe I'll have more to say about this later. I don't know. I talked a bit about it on today's DL right at the start, where I read Ergun Caner's letter and my response. I'm still processing this myself. I am still in a bit of shock. In any case, here is today's DL. I have added all of today's correspondence to the pdf we were building a few weeks ago, here. But what you need to know is all found in this final exchange:
Dear James:
For the last time, are you trying to weasel out of a debate for which we have already agreed?
FOR THE LAST TIME, are you trying to change the agreed format and rules?
FOR THE LAST TIME, for the sake of clarity, are you backing out, running away, or trying to change (in midstream) a debate for which all parties have already settled?
We are preparing to upload your response, and the National Liberty Journal readers- almost 500,000- want to know.
We stand without fear, and without flinching. We are ready.
As for this discussion, I am done. I shall be there, on Monday, Oct 16, either to debate the topic, or lament the fact that your side could not debate without trying to manipulate the proceedings. Let the record show- Emir and I are still ready to debate- as promised.
Jill- please upload this to the LTS website, copy to Dr Falwell, and my website as well.
emc

   Incredible. Simply incredible.
You honestly have no idea how you are behaving, do you, sir? You have no concept of how childish and immature your bullying tactics are. Is there no one, Ergun, at Liberty, who can take you aside and help you? This is simply incredible, it truly is. It is a sad, sad day for Liberty University that a man who can be so completely beyond reason, so deaf to the most basic appeals for mature interaction, can be "in charge."
Dr. Caner, you fear debating me directly. That has come out clearly in our correspondence. You know you could never survive a scholarly exchange with me on the level of the text. You are acting with all this bluster because you know this to be true. This is why you avoid a one-on-one debate. This is why you avoid a clear thesis. This is especially why you avoid cross-examination. I know this, you know this, and the fair minded reader of our exchanges knows this. Your failure to engage any level of conversation since February makes this painfully clear.
Briefly:
   1) It is untrue that we have agreed to the format and rules. To say otherwise is a documented lie.
   2) It is untrue that all parties have "settled" these issues. To say otherwise is a documented lie.
   3) I remind you, sir, that I have a standing challenge to you to face me, one-on-one, in front of each of your classes to discuss, from the text of Scripture, its specific teaching on election and predestination. Anyone standing by that challenge is hardly backing out or running away.
Any honest-minded person can read our exchanges and see the facts. You have acted dishonestly, and I call upon you to repent of your actions.
Now, as to the debate. Since you do not engage in reasoned dialogue, but instead operate on the "I don't care about what you said, you will do as I say" model, here's the story.
   1) I will be there October 16th.
   2) Dr. Ascol will not. He has no intention of being treated like dirt on your shoe, and I have no intention of asking him to endure such childish retorts and dishonesty. When I asked him to join me, I believed I was dealing with men of integrity who would behave as Christians. If I had had any idea of the level to which you would stoop, I would never have invited anyone at all to endure such behavior. We had agreed a few weeks ago that if you did not show some signs of actually being willing to engage in adult and scholarly conversation at this point, he would not be involved in the debate. Since then, other issues have arisen (noted on his blog) which only confirm the wisdom of that decision.
   3) I will debate you both. You have no reason to complain. You have been trying to tell folks I want to "back out" and "run away" for weeks. That's called wishful thinking, Ergun. The fact is, you know better. I will be there to demonstrate that your thesis is heretical; that your denial to God of the capacity of love with discernment is unbiblical and illogical; and that God is free and sovereign in the matter of human salvation. I have debated in less friendly situations.
So it is settled. James White vs. the Caner brothers. Thomas Road Baptist Church. October 16th. Parliamentary procedure. Thesis is the unintelligible mess you insist upon and which I will use as a springboard to demonstrate the incoherence of synergism and the clarity of God's truth from Scripture. The two sides get completely equal time---don't think you get twice as much just because I will be upholding biblical monergism by myself. I will be keeping very careful track of time to ensure fairness, as will others.
Please forward the name of the person responsible for the facilities. Richard Pierce will need to begin discussions regarding video taping and providing redundancy so as to preclude any mishaps.
James>>>

To which Ergun Caner replied:
Dear Dr White:
Good, I am glad to see we shall have the debate. See you then.

Anthony Buzzard "Reviews" The Forgotten Trinity

07/13/2006 - James White

Sam Shamoun, Islamic expert extraordinaire, happened to notice that once again a cheap hit piece has been posted in the guise of a "review" of one of my books on Amazon. I truly detest the review features which are so rarely used for reviews and so often used as a major-league sized "comments" section (another good example of why comments sections, in general, should be viewed as little more than "ITIAs," that is, Internet Theological Ignorance Aggregators). It would never cross my mind to be running around Amazon flaming books and giving them "one star" just to drag down their rating. Few things are more childish.
This particular review was posted by a rather well known anti-Trinitarian that I have discussed on The Dividing Line in the past, Anthony Buzzard. On January 24th of this year I reviewed some of his comments in his discussion with Shabir Ally. You can listen to the mp3 of the program here. Sam and I demonstrated that his oft-repeated and key argument regarding Psalm 110 is simply fallacious on its face to anyone who actually knows something about the languages and history of the Bible. As I pointed out then, I have informed Buzzard of the errors in his presentation in the past. In any case, Buzzard's "review" of The Forgotten Trinity is not a review at all, and since it contains numerous errors of its own, I respond to it here.

John White's

James. James Bond.
Forgotten Trinity is a brave attempt to defend the non-biblical doctrine of the Trinity. He overlooks without comment the massive evidence which persuades scholarly and other non-Trinitarians that God is one Person, that God is the Father of Jesus the begotten Son (LUke 1:35)(God = the Father 1300 times in the NT and Jesus is given the title in a secondary sense twice for certain-- John 20:28; Heb 1:8.)

Excuse me? Overlooks without comment? Anyone who has read the book knows either Buzzard didn't bother to read the book, or, he is not overly honest in his comments. Anyone who has read the endnotes especially knows how often objections are met head on in that material. As to the usage of qeo,j (God) in the New Testament, those who have read my work know that I dedicated entire chapters to the subject, and fully discussed the issue in the book. Just what is accomplished by misrepresenting the book so badly in the first paragraph is difficult to comprehend. I have Buzzard's works, and if I were to post a review, one thing is for certain: my standard of review would be quite different than his own. ...

Taking a Fresh Look

07/13/2006 - James White

The following e-mail was sent Thursday morning, July 13th, 2006, at 10:26am MST:

Dear Dr. Caner:

I just returned from ministering in the United Kingdom at the School of Theology at the Metropolitan Tabernacle in London, as well as a quick trip up to Glasgow, where I combined ministry (spoke on the Bible's teaching on homosexuality-a privilege that will surely come under fire in the UK before long) with pleasure (I ordered my formal kilt at a very nice men's shop in downtown Glasgow!). I don't detect any Scottish heritage in you, so I doubt you can understand my excitement on that last point!

In any case, as you have probably noted, Dr. Ascol and I have allowed things to "quiet down" some over the past few weeks. Obviously, a "time out" was needed, because things had gotten quite out of hand. In essence, from our viewpoint, no discussion was taking place. We were being told what was going to happen and how it was going to happen, and that was basically it. So we decided to let the dust settle and step back and take one more run at this debate issue to see if, in fact, we can arrange something that will be a blessing to God's people.

From the start I have emphasized the need to put the audience first. We need to bless the people of God. Those in attendance that night, and those who watch the debate on DVD, or listen to the audio recordings, need to be encouraged in their walk of faith. They need to hear the Word of God honored and handled with proper respect and obedience. They need to see the proper attitude modeled by those involved in the debate.

With this in mind, I wish to go back to square one with you, Ergun. I wish to revisit the entire debate situation, this time doing so with one over-arching concern: what is best for the people of God? What makes for the best debate? As I present my suggestion for how this needs to be done, I will provide an argument from my experience in debate to demonstrate why this is best for the audience. If you disagree, I will respectfully ask you to provide counter-argumentation, not merely from preference or feeling, but from experience, providing reasoned arguments. This way our prospective audience can know that care was taken to consider them in the process of arranging this encounter. ...

A Special Word of Thanks

07/12/2006 - James White

I wanted to give a special thanks for Eddie and Lucy McKee, both members of PRBC. Eddie has been giving a lot of his personal time helping Rich with building projects in our new offices (hope to see the first six sets of shelves next week) and keeping the offices clean (he runs his own cleaning business, so if you are in the Phoenix area, call McKleen!). Lucy works for the Phoenix PD. She also loves to sew/crochet/whatever ladies do with string and thread and yesterday they came over to watch the DL and then gave me a wonderful "office warming" present. And indeed, the phrase is appropriate, as it will definitely warm me up during the winter months (don't need a lot of warming right now, as they are talking highs near 115 this week). This lovely blanket features the A&O logo on a blue background. She worked on it for a very long time. I have placed it on the love-seat along the wall so everyone can see it. Eventually that bare wall will have pictures and things on it. All in time. Anyway, thanks again to Eddie and Lucy!

Paige Patterson Takes Up Whole Hour on the DL

07/11/2006 - James White

I managed to figure out where I left off in reviewing Paige Patterson's presentation at the SBC, so we picked up right there today on the DL. For some odd reason got no calls, took no break, but pressed on for the whole hour on that one subject. And guess what? Paige Patterson mis-quoted a particular verse. Yes, that verse, again! Which one? You'll just have to listen!

It Is Good to be Home / A Request

07/11/2006 - James White

Well, eight hours from Gatwick, another five from Philadelphia. Makes for a long trip, to be sure! But nothing spectacular to report. I did see "Eight Below" twice though. Yeah, I teared up when the guy found Maya and thought she was dead. I'm a softie, really.
Once again, my deepest thanks to Roger Brazier, pastor of the Edmonton Baptist Chapel for his tireless support of my feeble efforts to bless the saints in the UK. Without Roger and his family I would never have had the opportunities I have had over the past year or so. Anyone who can put up with me for days on end like Roger can should be nominated for some kind of medal...or sainthood or something. Here's a picture from yesterday of Roger and me. Likewise, Jim and Chrissie Handyside in Glasgow have proven themselves "hospitable to the saints" in every way. And my thanks to Peter Masters and the fine folks of the Metropolitan Tabernacle for their hospitality as well.
I am going to try to post the talk I gave in Glasgow on homosexuality as well as my gospel sermon from Jeremiah 9 in London for those wishing to listen.
I head back to work this week with a mountain before me. I hope to take a fresh run at the Ergun Caner situation and seek to reason with brother Caner on the grounds that we must set aside our personal feelings and seek the benefit of the saints. Period. I challenged him to debate because his statements are demonstrably in error regarding the Reformed faith and the consistency of being a Baptist and believing that Jesus Christ saves perfectly without needing human assistance in the matter. I challenged him to debate on the basis of a common commitment to the inspiration and inerrancy of God's Word, the Bible. And I challenged him, personally. I still intend to seek that encounter, to the benefit of God's people. We need to go back to square one, however. It is time to be fair in this discussion. I will present my proposal for the debate format and thesis. I will explain how the audience is benefitted by each and every element. Then I will ask Dr. Caner to please explain, if he disagrees with any element of the proposal, how his counter-proposal specifically and clearly benefits the listening audience. I will challenge him to let that one consideration guide: how will the people of God be best benefitted? We will see if he will allow thoe considerations to take precedence and guide our negotiations.
At the same time, I must rush headlong back into Pulpit Crimes, which has taken a vacation since I got back a few weeks ago. And while doing these things, I must press forward with preparation for the other debates coming up in a matter of weeks, literally, aside from my preaching duties and the like. It is wonderful to have so many opportunities upcoming, but I feel a great weight to do my best in all of these presentations.
So at this very challenging time could I ask all of those who regularly read this blog, listen to the Dividing Line, and utilize the resources we seek to provide to the people of God in apologetics and evangelism, to remember us at this time? Many of our regular readers are taking vacations and paying extra at the pump. Summertime can be a "lull" for many, and as a result, "discretionary" funds go elsewhere. Our ministry is very small, and hence even small interruptions are large to us. Remember that you can join us as a regular supporter and by so doing receive full access to our entire mp3 library. Click on the "Support Us" link on the left to learn more. I know it will be a great encouragement to me if Rich can tell me that a number of brothers and sisters have contacted us and shown their support in a tangible way at this time. I appreciate your consideration at this time.

Last Word from the UK

07/09/2006 - James White

Heading home tomorrow morning (Lord willing, as with all air travel). Spoke at the Edmonton Baptist Chapel this morning, then had a little adventure trying to get downtown. We were providentially hindered from making it. Back last evening from Glasgow, where I spoke on homosexuality at the Reformed Baptist Church, pastor Jim Handyside. And yes, I ordered my kilt while I was there! Had a great time with Jim and his wife, despite his assertion that my Scottish accent sounds like a mixture of Pakistani and Italian.
Mr. Compston was kind enough to give me some clearer shots from the School of Theology. Since many have never seen the inside of the Metropolitan Tabernacle, I thought I'd provide this shot which gives you a much better perspective on how it is laid out. The barely visible orange you see in the tie there is the MacGregor Hunting tartan.
Lord willing we will do the Dividing Line at its regular time on Tuesday, 11am MST, 2pm EDT. I cannot guarantee that I will be overly lively, I confess, but I leave that to the Lord.

Greetings from London

07/05/2006 - James White

A quick "hello" from downtown London. I'm actually finished speaking at the School of Theology, though there is one day left to go. Got caught in a downpour yesterday, got back to the Tabernacle only 15 minutes before speaking, looking like I swam in. But the Lord was merciful and I was able to put that out of my mind as I spoke on the fact that many evangelical churches today are functionally non-trinitarian. The fellowship has been wonderful with all of God's people here in the UK.
For those in the Glasgow area I will be speaking on the issue of homosexuality Friday night there in Anniesland. I do not know how much longer we will be able to advertise such meetings here in the UK. Amazing developments in granting super-rights to the homosexual community, and don't be deceived, that is exactly what they want in the US as well.

Quick Note

07/01/2006 - James White

With the morning Bible Study and both services tomorrow, followed by a morning flight out, through Charlotte, to London, basically wiping Monday out, getting me in only hours before I speak at the School of Theology on Tuesday, I have a feeling I won't be blogging for a while. Lord willing I may--and I emphasize may--get a chance to put something up after my presentation on the deity of Christ on Wednesday, but we will see. For those in the Glasgow area, I'm speaking on the issue of homosexuality on Friday night in Anniesland, 7:30pm, Reformed Baptist Church, Herschell Street. I will also be speaking Sunday morning at the Edmonton Baptist Chapel as well. This will be a fairly quick trip, in comparison to those in the past, but I look forward to meeting with all my brothers and sisters who are able to make it to the School of Theology or wherever we may meet.
